Virtual Attendance

Items Sent Via Mail

Virtual Graduate participants will be mailed a diploma cover, program book, and any honor or involvement cords they have earned throughout their academic journey prior to the ceremony. (Please make sure your mailing address is correct in mywsu).

Rehearsal

We will be hosting a practice session for commencement on May 2 at 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Time) during which you can ask any questions that you may have. Those who register for virtual attendance will receive a Zoom invitation for the rehearsal via email.

Joining the Zoom Event

  • Graduating students who are participating in the Commencement Ceremony will log into the Zoom room beginning at 9:45 a.m. on May 4.
  • To log in you must have a Zoom account. It’s best to ensure you have your account ready, and your software updated, before the event.
  • IMPORTANT – Tech Support:  If you are in the Zoom room prior to the start of the event and have a question for Tech Support, please communicate to the host or cohost privately via the chat function.
  • IMPORTANT – Check Your Name:  Make sure that your first and last names on Zoom match the name you registered under. You can find instructions on how to do this on the Zoom support page

Event Schedule and Instructions

  • Join via Zoom between 9:45-9:55 a.m. Once in the room, you will see a welcome slide. Please wait patiently in the Zoom room for the ceremony to begin.
  • The ceremony will begin at 10:00 am. You will be able to hear the welcome and guest speakers.
  • Turn on your camera. If your camera is not already on, the host will prompt you to turn it on when you join. Your camera should remain on throughout the ceremony so that you can be recognized.
  • Leave your microphone off. Your mic should remain muted throughout the ceremony. Ignore the prompt to unmute your microphone when you are spotlighted during your turn in the ceremony (this prompt can not be turned off by the host).
  • Get ready for your recognition. When the in-person commencement participants are told to line up, you know it’s your cue to be ready to have your Zoom room displayed to the audience. Names will be read by degree program and the ceremony will move between in person and virtual commencement participants.
  • You can review the 2024 Global Campus Commencement program for more information about the ceremony and order of events.

Zoom Best Practices

  • Check Zoom for software updates prior to the ceremony! WSU-hosted Zoom meetings REQUIRE attendees to use an up-to-date version of Zoom to join.
  • Connectivity –
    • Use wired Ethernet if possible
    • Restrict network usage by others on your network
    • Close other applications on your computer
  • Zoom Etiquette during the ceremony –
    • We encourage you to decorate your background with WSU colors, swag, and WSU memorabilia.
    • Ensure there is a sufficient light source in front of you. A light source behind you, such as a window, may cause silhouetting and obscure your image.
    • Be patient and pay attention for your name to be called.
    • Remember to smile!
