From Challenges to Recognition: Global Campus Senior Earns Top WSU Honors

Aunjelique Andersen, a current Global Campus student and student ambassador, has been named among Washington State University’s Top Ten Seniors for 2026, recognized as the Undergraduate Leader of Distinction by WSU’s President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW), and was awarded the WSU Global Campus President’s Award for Leadership.
“This recognition means a lot to me because it acknowledges the hard work and effort I’ve put into school, leadership, and helping others,” said Andersen. “It reflects my personal journey, including the challenges I’ve faced.”
“At the same time, I feel very humbled by this recognition because I’ve never done any of this work for awards. I truly believe there are so many other people doing amazing things who also deserve to be recognized.”
The PCSW’s Leader of Distinction awards are presented annually to recognize the achievements and contributions of women to their academic and local communities and to society.
The Top Ten Seniors award program, presented by the WSU Alumni Association (WSUAA), recognizes ten graduating seniors who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, campus involvement, and community service. Andersen was recognized in the community service category.
The WSU Global Campus President’s Award for Leadership is awarded annually as part of the WSU Global Campus Chancellor’s Awards. This award distinguishes a student whose exceptional leadership spans multiple domains—academics, service, and community impact—and who embodies the highest ideals of our university. Since 1996, this prestigious honor has been awarded to those whose vision and dedication inspire others.
On top of these honors, Andersen has also been recognized as a top fundraiser for #CougsGive Day on April 15, 2026. Her outreach efforts as a #CougsGive ambassador inspired 54 gifts and helped Global Campus double giving for 2026.
Leadership, Community, and Creativity
Andersen leads the Cougs & Cubs Club and Ink & Pen Creative Writing Club and serves as a student ambassador for WSU Global Campus. Across these roles, she focuses on building community, especially for students balancing academics with work, caregiving, and other responsibilities.
What people do even in the face of adversity and obstacles can inspire others that might be going through something similar.

“I feel these awards shed light on the work that others are doing at WSU and in the community,” said Andersen. “It boosts morale and lets recipients know that they are doing a great job and making a difference in the world. What people do even in the face of adversity and obstacles can inspire others that might be going through something similar.”
Overcoming Challenges while Pursuing Her Degree
In addition to her academic and leadership commitments, Andersen is a small business owner and a foster and adoptive parent. With such a full plate, her journey to graduation included significant personal and academic challenges too.
“I experienced many challenges while I earned my degree, including cancer. I also experienced challenges as a parent taking on many extra responsibilities,” she said. “The struggle of trying to stay in school with all the added stressors was difficult. I had to take a minute to breathe and persist.”
“It also helped that I had people to talk to, whether it was my fellow students in clubs or through participating in WSU Global Campus’s Stress Reduction and Mindfulness workshops.”
Advice for Other Students
Andersen encourages students facing similar challenges to define success in a way that fits their lives.
“Everyone’s journey is different. One student’s balance might look different than another’s. Whether it is full-time or part-time schooling, do what works for you,” said Andersen. “Take a step back when needed, go take that walk, go hang out with your kids.”
“Also, the clubs that Global Campus offers, like Cougs & Cubs Club for caregivers, can be an outlet for students who may feel overwhelmed,” she said. “They can be a great place to come, have fellowship with others, and share what things worked for them. It helps to know that you are all in the same boat.”
Reflecting on The Journey
Andersen received her awards during ceremonies on March 26, 2026 (Leaders of Distinction) and April 23, 2026 (Top Ten Seniors).
“I want to thank those who nominated me, as well as all my fellow students, club leaders, and student ambassadors that I have had the pleasure of working with,” said Andersen. “They have made my time at WSU fun, but they have also supported me by collaboration, showing up and showing me, what teamwork looks like when you have a solid team of people who I now call friends.”
“I also can’t forget to thank my husband and kiddos that support me through all the chaos of life.”
