Five Tips for Jump-Starting Your Career

This month, we sat down with Global Campus’ career advisor, Chris Miller, to discuss strategies, resources, and opportunities for students contemplating their professional futures after finishing their degree programs. Here are five tips he shared to help you get ahead of the curve and make the most of your time at Global Campus:
- Enroll in a Course
Still clarifying your career goals? Consider taking UNIV 301 – College Major and Career Planning, a one-credit course offered each semester that provides a structured introduction to the career exploration process. Through this course, Global Campus students can explore professional opportunities relating to their interests, values, and skills to find meaningful careers that fit their lifestyles. - Apply for a Micro-Internship
If you’re balancing coursework with professional and family responsibilities but still want to develop new, transferable skills, check out the Parker Dewey Micro-Internship program. These short-term projects provide real-world experience relevant to your degree and career goals with a lesser time commitment than traditional internships. You can also explore platforms like Virtual Internships and Forage for additional opportunities.
- Consult the Global Campus Blog
Stay connected by visiting the Global Campus blog and reading the monthly student newsletter to discover upcoming career development opportunities. From job market data to virtual career and graduate school fairs to networking events, there’s something for everyone to discover—no matter your major or where you are in your educational journey.
- Do Your Research
Curious about a specific occupation or field? Check out Labor Market Insights to learn more about different careers. Here, you’ll find information about core tasks, employment trends, top employers, educational and skill requirements, salaries, and more.
- Utilize Online Tools
Every WSU student has access to Handshake, a job and internship posting board used by colleges throughout the nation. Through this platform, you can learn about virtual career fairs, attend virtual career development events, and find companies of interest in your own geographical area. Make sure to check back frequently for new postings and opportunities.
Once you’re ready to begin applying for jobs and internships, you can use AI tools like Kickresume and Rxresume to compare your application materials to job postings and tailor your résumé and cover letter for each position. Remember that you also have access to Resume Worded, which helps ensure that your key skills are highlighted in your application.
