Virtual Mentor Tips: How to Succeed in Winter Session and Intersession

Winter Session and Intersession courses are a great way to earn extra credits toward your degree in a short amount of time. One advantage is that they are separate from your regular semester courses, allowing you to focus your full attention on just one class. A course that might typically span a full 15-week semester is compressed into as little as three intensive weeks—so it’s important to be ready.

Here are some tips to help you succeed:

Plan your strategy

Short sessions move quickly! It’s essential to develop a study strategy that works for you. Some students find they need to fit their coursework into smaller blocks of time throughout the day. During these fast-paced terms, flexibility is often more important than sticking to a rigid routine.

Plan for a significant time commitment

These courses demand more concentrated effort. Expect to spend 25 to 30 or more hours per week on your course. That may seem like a lot, but the time flies—especially in a three-week session.

Get your ducks in a row

Before the course begins, gather all required books and materials so you can hit the ground running. If you’re unfamiliar with the learning platform, take time to watch a tutorial or explore the interface. Direct academic questions to your instructor early and often.

Check your internet connection and technology

Make sure your internet connection is reliable and that your device and browser are compatible with the learning platform. Have a backup plan in case of technical issues, like power or internet outages, and test course videos or presentations in advance. Some courses may require additional software—check early and familiarize yourself with any special tools you’ll be using.

Take advantage of early access

Course spaces usually open a few weeks before the session begins. Use this time to review the syllabus and start familiarizing yourself with the content and assignments. Being proactive can give you a strong head start and reduce stress.

Read the syllabus and course schedule

Go over the syllabus and course calendar carefully. Note all readings, assignments, and due dates. Consider printing out a calendar or writing key deadlines in a planner so you can stay organized and on track.

Know the drop and withdraw deadlines

If something comes up, you can drop or withdraw from the by specific deadlines. Don’t hesitate to make that decision quickly if needed—life happens.

Reach out!

If you’re stuck or unsure about something, reach out to your professor or classmates for support. Don’t wait until things get out of hand. Consider joining a study group or finding a study partner to stay motivated and on track.

*Remember: Winter Session and Intersession don’t allow much room to fall behind. Stay focused and keep moving forward—you’ve got this!
