WSU’s online undergraduate Editing & Publishing Certificate (EPC) program is a customizable, career-oriented curriculum that allows students to learn fundamental editorial tools in an interdisciplinary context. Our certificate offers a uniquely integrative option for enhancing professional skills and preparing students for a variety of career opportunities.

Students enrolled in the online certificate will complete three core courses as well as electives and internships in one of two thematic tracks: digital/design or popular/scholarly editing and publishing. A total of 15 credits is required to earn the certificate. There are no prerequisites for enrolling in the EPC, although interested students are encouraged to register by spring semester of sophomore year (and no later than the fall semester of junior year).

The certificate requires four 3-credit courses and three 1-credit internships (or a total of 3 internship credits completed via one or more internships).

Required Courses

15 semester credits

Core Curriculum [3 Courses/9 Credits]:

  • DTC 201 – Tools and Methods for Digital Technology
  • ENG 357 – Editing & Publishing
  • ENG 405 – Advanced Professional Writing and Editing

Electives [1 Course/3 Credits]:

Students will select either the Digital/Design track or the Popular/Scholarly track, then choose one elective from the following options:

Digital Design Track:
  • DTC 354, 355, 477, or 478; or FINE ARTS 363
  • Emphasis on multimedia design, digital media tools, web development, digital storytelling, digital art, typography, and/or design for print.
Popular/Scholarly Track
  • ENGLISH 365, 402, or 495
  • Emphasis on industry tools and conventions of grammar, copyediting, ESL editing and literacy, business, professional, and magazine writing, proposal and grant writing, diversity, accessibility, and rhetoric.

Internships [3 Credits]

  • Students must take three credits of ENGLISH 498, – Internship (Cooperative learning experience in business, education, or industry in English-related jobs. Three credits required.)

Awarding of the Certificate

At the beginning of the student’s final semester of coursework, the student should apply for the certificate through myWSU. This will notify the Registrar’s Office to confer the certificate. Here’s how: From the myWSU Student Homepage, select Academic Advising, then Apply to Graduate. The certificate should display as an option to select to Apply for Graduation. Certificates require a separate graduation application and are mailed separately from diplomas.
