President’s Report

Gina Vasquez, ASWSUG President

Over the last few weeks the ASWSU Global team has been working to prepare reimbursements and virtual events for students for the 2020 fall semester. As President, I have been working with team members to provide support and guidance as everyone settles into their new roles. The most time-consuming of tasks has been the drafting of the new bylaws which Director of Legislative Affairs, Samantha, has been assisting with on top of her regular duties.

At the next meeting the team will be welcoming in students who have applied to be on the Resource Allocation and Accountability Committee. Once the 7 members have been selected, we will then allow them some time to organize and select a Chair and Vice Chair. This committees first official duty will be to review and revise the newly drafted bylaws which govern ASWSU Global.

Over the last couple weeks, I have also been working with Andria and Vice President Heather to put together a plan for onboarding a new team member. Reviews of applicants will be done in the next couple weeks and we hope to present a new Director of Academic Affairs at the first October Executive Board meeting. We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we get this matter resolved and respect to our peer’s decision to step down.

As we work to onboard a new member and get settled into the academic year, I will continue to provide support to our Executive Team and advocate for students.

Vice President Report

Heather Leasure, ASWSUG Vice President

I have been researching honor societies to change the reimbursement from just NSLS to all the societies we recognize at WSU. I have also been working on posting events on my VP Facebook and the WSU Global Cougs Facebook Group to keep it engaged and the members in there informed. I revamped the training power point, assisted in the training of the new directors, attended all the WoW events to be a representative, had meetings with each director as well as with Gina to make sure expectations were clear and to work through what things needed to be completed and we made combo groups of directors that will be closely working together this year. I post the weekly check ins and load the office hours on teams so we know when we can contact each other.

I also created the VP team for all the campus VP’s to have a place to come together and share ideas and to stay in touch. As well as was selected to be the public relations manager for SGC. I will be working with Chelsea to support her anyway I can with events, helping Ariadna with reimbursements and supporting the other directors anyway I can. I would like to see us host some game nights and also sponsor nights with Global Connections.

Director of Legislative Affairs Report

Samantha Fakharzadeh, ASWSUG Director of Legislative Affairs

What I Am Working on Currently

I have been working on creating the Global Campus legislative agenda. After scouring the current and past bills, I have decided that our agenda should include:

  • Increased access to open source educational materials.
  • Protecting student reproductive health by working to ensure that student health insurance properly covers pregnancy services.
  • Capping Graduate and Professional student tuition increase.
  • Removal of the SAT and ACT requirements in WA state.
  • Increasing WAFSA grant funding for undocumented students.
  • Lowering the work hour requirement or including the ability to substitute learning hours for the increased ability to access childcare assistance.

Some of these points are made in concurrence with the WSA 2020/2021 legislative agenda. My main goal is to remove barriers that inhibit the average person’s ability to access higher education.

I have also been working on “Cougs Vote.” Apart from making sure that students are registered to vote, breaking down politics and the law into bite sized pieces that will get students more involved in the political process.

I have also joined the Students of Color Coalition and weighed in on Gina’s and the Spokane DoLA’s diversity proposals.

What I Am Working on in the Near Future

I am taking suggestions before finalizing the legislative agenda! I will also be contacting legislators and other DoLAs, creating a strong base of support before going into the 2021 legislative session.

Director of Marketing & Innovation Report

Alma Perez, ASWSUG Director of Marketing and Innovation

Brief Summary of What You Have Been Working On

I have been doing a lot design work. Created the graphic to go out on our newsletter. However, that was not released because I am awaiting confirmation about the registration process and having the link to it. I also designed the graphic that all of our photos are being placed on for our social media intro posts.

To do these, I am selecting the director photo from our website, placing it into the graphic, and selecting snippets from the website blurb to post on our social media. I then also post it onto our story in hopes more people will see it.

Our giveaway post was also made so that people can begin tagging friends and following us. Heather and I worked out the final details for this.

Created Facebook events for our upcoming meetings.

What You Will Be Working On Between Now and the Next Meeting

I will continue to publish the bios of our remaining directors on social media. Promote the meeting have on next week to meet with students. We have our giveaway this weekend as well, so I will be monitoring comments, then putting something together to select the winner. That will be announced on Monday 08/31.

Any Updates

No updates! All is going as planned.

Project Ideas

I’m still brainstorming more ways to increase followers. I hope to have a more solid answer on this by our next meeting.

Meeting Updates

Most of the communication with other members has been through teams chat. I’ve been mostly working with Chelsea and Tessa to finalize projects and get all details sorted out. We completed the giveaway sneak peeks, posting language, and then promoting the meeting next Friday!

Added Notes

This week has been so hectic for me. It’s my last week at my current job before I switch over, so timing wise my hours have been all over the place in scattered increments. Thank you for your understanding!

Director of Communication & Compliance Report

Tessa Endencia, ASWSUG Director of Communication and Compliance

Brief Summary of What You Have Been Working On

From a high level perspective, I have been working on solidifying our communication strategy with the focus being on the website. I’ve conducted a technical audit, and I’ve begun making some basic changes, including the header. As an organization, the website is the foundation of what we have to offer, from connecting students to resources to providing helpful information. The goal of this project is to ensure we have a place that is accessible, easy to navigate, and informative.

In addition, our first email campaign went out at 8 AM on the first day of class. The goal of this campaign was to give the global student body an introduction to the student government, primarily focusing on who we are, what we do, and how we can help them succeed in the coming year.

What You Will Be Working On Between Now and the Next Meeting

Early this week, I submitted a recommendation for navigation. This week, I will be working on consolidating content so that resources are easy to find and drafting copy where needed.

Any Updates

We will be holding our first event next week (an ASWSUG Meet and Greet), and registration is live on the website.

Project Ideas

For the next few weeks, I would like to start focusing on newsletter content. These should go out once or twice a month, and we should attempt to keep it on a consistent schedule.

This newsletter content should be engaging and relevant to the student body, with the emphasis on timeliness — e.g., including tips for managing holiday stress around the holiday time, study tips during finals, etc. I would also like to start involving alumni if possible — one thing that I think will be really motivating for the student body is for them to see other people that were formerly in their shoes (e.g., as a distance learning student) and seeing them succeed.

Meeting Updates

We’ve had some really great introduction calls in the last month and helped solidify our goals for the coming year. We have a great team, and I’m super excited to be working with everyone!
