WSU Global Campus to host first system-wide esports tournament

Washington State University is announcing its first ever system-wide esports tournament, slated for the week of March 21, 2022.

The fully virtual tournament, titled Global Gauntlet, will be hosted by WSU Global Campus and is open to current and incoming students from all campuses and locations in the WSU system.

“This is really a unique event. We hope to bring together Coug video game enthusiasts from all six WSU campuses, to compete in a fun and fast-paced tournament,” said Dave Cillay, WSU Global Campus chancellor. “This is a great opportunity for students to show off their esports skills, earn great prizes, meet fellow students with common interests, and just have a good time.”

Global Gauntlet will bring together three-person teams of Cougs to compete in the video game Rocket League. The top three teams will receive prizes.

Registration for the tournament is now open

“Since Rocket League is a team-oriented game, I think we will see some great collaboration and camaraderie among WSU students around the world,” said Cillay. “The tournament is fast approaching, and I encourage students to start thinking about forming teams now.”

WSU Global Campus will host a virtual community building and Q&A event in January where students can meet up, form Global Gauntlet teams, and have their questions about the tournament answered.

“We’re really excited about the tournament. We’ve never done anything quite like it before,” said James Hoplin, WSU’s esports coordinator. “WSU Global Campus is looking to do more with esports in the coming months, so stay tuned for more exciting developments like this. Go Cougs!”

Participants must be current or incoming WSU students to be eligible to compete. Learn more about participation requirements, how to register, and other details on the Global Gauntlet web page. This page will be updated frequently, so be sure to check back often to stay informed on new developments.
