Proctored Exams
WSU Online course exams are either timed exams completed while logged in to the Angel
learning environment, take-home exams, which are submitted like course work, or proctored
exams, which is an exam supervised by an eligible proctor. Some proctors
charge a fee.
How to Arrange Proctored Exams
There are three ways to take a proctored exam at WSU Online. Below are the steps required for each method.
Check your course syllabus to select the appropriate method, then follow the steps below.
(Some courses with online proctored exams require ProctorU.)
Note: Pullman campus students in blended courses take proctored exams at the
date/time/location indicated in the course schedule or syllabus.
Easy option: ProctorU
If your exams are online (not paper and pencil) and you choose the remote
proctoring option (ProctorU): |
Online exam supervised by a local proctor
If your exams are online and you choose to find a local proctor
who proctors online exams: |
Paper-based exam supervised by a local proctor
If your exams are paper-based (the syllabus indicates there is
no option for online exams): |
You use your own computer.
You will need a webcam with 640x480 video pixel resolution (webcams built into laptops or monitors are acceptable)
to take exams with ProctorU. If you need to purchase a webcam, the anticipated cost is approximately $20-$30.
ProctorU charges $22.50 for a two-hour exam, and $8.75 per additional hour.
ProctorU charges a $5.00 rush fee, if the proctor is reserved three days or less before the exam.
ProctorU does not proctor paper and pencil exams.
Check the syllabus for exam duration and special requirements.
The first time you use ProctorU,
select New Users: Create an Account and complete the
Request Login ID form.
At least one week prior to taking the exam, sign in to
ProctorU and
select Schedule or Take an Exam to reserve your exam appointment. Proctor U will send you a
confirmation of your appt.
Access your ProctorU account to
check/update your exam appt. time as needed.
If you have any problems, call ProctorU’s Proctor Line at 205-870-8122.
|
You will not be allowed to use your own computer.
It is your responsibility to confirm that the proctor has a computer, with Web
access, available for the duration of the exam.

Proctors' Duties << Hide
To supervise an exam as a proctor, the individual must be willing to
execute the following duties:
- after receiving the exam, check to be sure that the exam is the correct one;
- be aware of what outside materials the test allows (laptop/computer, calculator, notes, text, disability accommodation);
- secure the exam packet until the exam appointment;
- be available during the whole exam appointment;
- provide a quiet area at the proctor’s business and a table top for taking the exam — and, in the case of an online proctored exam, a computer (students may not provide the computer for the exam) with Internet access for the full exam time (up to 2.5 hours);
- identify the student by photo ID if not known personally;
- make sure purses, backpacks, hats, cell phones, personal laptops, and notebooks (unless approved) are not taken into the test room;
- enforce that other individuals are not allowed in the testing area, unless they are approved in advance as part of disability accommodation.
- enforce that children are not allowed in the testing area (students are responsible for arranging for child care and personal matters prior to the exam);
- once the exam begins, monitor that the student does not leave the testing area for any reason until it is completed; the exam will be considered complete once the student leaves the room;
- collect the completed exam material from the student;
- note the begin and end time; date and sign the included form;
- handle the return mailing, faxing, or emailing of the exam and any additional work (if an exam must be returned by any type of express mail, students must pay the postage/charges but the proctor must handle the actual "mailing" of the exam).
In addition, the proctor should note the following:
- No assistance from computers, electronic devices, persons, references, books or notes are allowed unless otherwise specified.
- The exam is not to be passed on to another proctor without permission from WSU Online.
- Exam questions are not to be retained by the student.
- Special arrangements with WSU Online must be made before the exam can be duplicated or returned by fax or email.
- A postage paid return envelope is provided in the exam packet. Students requesting special handling must provide postage but the proctor must handle the actual return mailing.
- An untaken exam may be held by the proctor for up to 120 days.
Any deviation may invalidate the exam.

class to addresses within the United States; outside the United States they are sent via air
mail.
- If there are no special delivery requests, allow at least two weeks for processing and
delivery. The date sent will be listed in the Exam Sent to Proctor column.

Most paper proctored exams are not returned to students after they are graded, but if you'd like to review a paper exam, there are
two ways:
- Students not on the Pullman campus may request WSU Online to send a copy of a graded exam to their proctor to
review under proctor supervision. Contact WSU Online at online@wsu.edu or 800-222-4978
and submit the following information:
- student's name
- WSU ID number
- course exam to be reviewed
- proctor contact info.
The exam will be mailed to the proctor. After it has been reviewed, the proctor must shred the exam; it may not be retained
by the student. Students may not take notes or make a copy of the exam being reviewed.
- Students on the Pullman campus may make arrangements to view a graded exam at the WSU Online main office in Van Doren Hall Room 104,
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
