Academic Deficiency and Reinstatement Process

<< Back to Advising & Registration Center

There are many Academic Regulations at WSU. Some of these regulations define good academic standing; others outline the requirements for reinstatement to good academic standing or to WSU.

Good Academic Standing

Washington State University expects students to maintain academic standards of excellence and make satisfactory academic progress toward their degree objectives.

Undergraduate students are in good academic standing if both their current WSU semester and cumulative grade point averages are 2.00 or above. Students not meeting this criteria are considered academically deficient. (Rule 35)

To find out if you are academically deficient:

  1. Check your grades on myWSU.
  2. If you are academically deficient, DDP will post a notice on your myWSU Official Notices page stating the academic regulation under which you are deficient.

What if you are Academically Deficient?

Nobody plans to be academically deficient. Many situations, some within your control and some outside your control, can contribute to academic deficiency. If you find yourself academically deficient, there are reinstatement steps you need to take depending on the academic "rule" under which you are deficient. These steps also depend on when you were last enrolled at WSU and what campus to which you will apply for reinstatement.

Pullman Campus Students

If you are a Pullman campus student, please see the Reinstatement Process - Pullman Campus information on the Academic Reinstatement Web page to obtain the appropriate reinstatement application and deadline information.

Note: If you intend to complete your degree through a department at WSU Pullman, but plan to take their final courses through DDP, you should apply to the Pullman campus.

Urban Campus Students (Spokane, Tri-Cities, or Vancouver)

If you plan to attend Spokane, Tri-Cities, or Vancouver please select the corresponding reinstatement application for your campus under the Other Campuses and Distance Degree Program section of the Academic Reinstatement Web page.

Distance Degree Programs Students

See the reinstatement process for each academic regulation listed below.

First time deficient with below a 2.0 semester or cumulative gpa (Rule 38)

What this means: You must apply for reinstatement and be approved to continue probationary enrollment at WSU.

Rule 38 states: An undergraduate (undeclared or certified major) who at the end of any one semester has failed to maintain a 2.00 semester and/or cumulative grade point average is considered academically deficient.

Students who are academically deficient under Rule 38 may apply for reinstatement. Reinstatement of Distance Degree Programs students will be considered based on the application and telephone interview. A certified major who has been interviewed and reinstated may be decertified by the academic department.

Reinstatement Process:

  • Complete an application for reinstatement which includes a personal statement. A processing fee applies, as noted on the reinstatement application.
  • To be considered for reinstatement, your application and fee must be received by DDP no later than 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date. (See Important Dates.) If you are mailing your application and fee, it is your responsibility to ensure that they reach DDP by the deadline date (postmarks not accepted).
  • After your application and fee has been received you will be required to participate in a phone interview prior to classes starting.
  • Course enrollment for the subsequent semester will be cancelled if an application for reinstatement has not been received and approved.
  • You must document attendance in any summer school courses, whether at WSU or another institution. Grades earned in summer school will be reviewed and the reinstatement decision can be reversed if conditions regarding summer grades are not met.

Second time deficient with below a 2.0 cumulative gpa but with above a 2.0 semester gpa (Rule 39 - with a 2.0 or better semester gpa)

What this means: You have shown progress toward achieving good academic standing but your cumulative gpa is still deficient. You must apply for reinstatement and be approved to continue probationary enrollment at WSU.

Rule 39 states: An undergraduate student who, at the end of any two semesters at WSU, has failed to maintain a 2.00 semester or cumulative grade point average will be dismissed from the university.

  1. However, Distance Degree Programs encourages DDP students to apply for reinstatement who have shown academic progress by earning at least a 2.00 semester gpa but whose cumulative gpa for two semesters is below 2.00.

    Reinstatement process under this scenario:
    • Complete an application for reinstatement which includes a personal statement. A processing fee applies.
    • To be considered for reinstatement, your application and fee must be received by DDP no later than 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date. (See Important Dates.) If you are mailing your application and fee, it is your responsibility to ensure that they reach DDP by the deadline date (postmarks not accepted).
    • There will be no opportunity for you to present your case in person.
    • You must document attendance in any summer school courses, whether at WSU or another institution. Grades earned in summer school will be reviewed and the reinstatement decision can be reversed if conditions regarding summer grades are not met.
  2. A DDP student who, at the end of any two semesters at WSU, has not shown academic progress and has failed to maintain a 2.0 semester and cumulative gpa will be dismissed from the university and courses for the subsequent semester will be cancelled.

Second time deficient with below a 2.0 semester and/or cumulative gpa (Rule 39)

What this means: You are dismissed from WSU, and courses for fall semester will be cancelled. Once dismissed, you are required to remain out of WSU for at least one academic year.

If you have unusual extenuating circumstances, however, you may apply to be considered for reinstatement. Follow the reinstatement process shown above to apply for reinstatement under this scenario.

Rule 39 states: An undergraduate student who, at the end of any two semesters at WSU, has failed to maintain a 2.00 semester or cumulative grade point average will be dismissed from the university.

Rule 40 (Reinstatement)

Rule 40 states: Students who are dismissed from the University are required to remain out of WSU for at least one academic year. All students seeking reinstatement must provide, as part of the application for readmission, documentation that demonstrates improved academic performance at the college level and/or a readiness for academic success at WSU. All academic coursework during the time away from WSU is required to be documented and transcripts submitted. Dismissed students who apply for reinstatement after one semester will be granted reinstatement only when unusual extenuating circumstances are present. In all cases, written documentation to support the application is required.

Reinstatement process:

  • Apply to WSU: complete a former student application.
  • There will be no opportunity for you to present their case in person.

Please Note:

Students who are academically deficient according to WSU policy are also considered as not maintaining satisfactory academic progress for financial aid purposes.
