Academic Deficiency and Reinstatement

If you have been away from WSU for two full semesters (Fall and Spring) and need reinstatement, you will need to reapply to return to WSU and should request reinstatement via the FutureCoug Portal.

If you plan to attend Pullman, Spokane, Tri-Cities, Everett, or Vancouver, please select the application for your campus on the ASCC website.

If you are a currently enrolled student, then you can complete this online form. Please email online@wsu.edu if you have any questions.

Good academic standing

WSU’s Academic Regulations define good academic standing and outline the requirements for reinstatement to good academic standing.

Washington State University expects students to maintain minimum academic standards and make satisfactory academic progress toward their degrees.

Undergraduate students are in good academic standing if both their current WSU semester and cumulative grade point averages are 2.00 or above.

Students not meeting this criteria are considered academically deficient.

To find out if you are academically deficient:

  • Check your grades in myWSU.
  • If you are academically deficient, we will post a notice in myWSU stating the academic regulation under which you are deficient.

What if you are academically deficient?

Sometimes even the best plans get derailed by circumstance. If you find yourself on the Academically Deficient list, there are a few simple steps to get you back on track. Those steps depend on the academic “rule” under which you are deficient, and when you were last enrolled at WSU.

Students who are academically deficient according to WSU policy may also be considered as not maintaining satisfactory academic progress for financial aid purposes.

There is a $60 nonrefundable reinstatement processing fee that is required before your application for reinstatement can be submitted.

Please be aware that if you have been out of WSU for two full academic semesters or more, you will also need to apply for admission to WSU by completing a Former Student Application. Your application and fee must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the deadline date. Your application for admission will not be processed until you have applied for reinstatement.

Review the reinstatement process for each academic regulation listed below.

Academic Rules and Reinstatement Process

If you have been out of WSU for two full academic semesters or more, you will also need to apply for admission to WSU by completing a Former Student Application. Your application and fee must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the deadline date.

First time deficient: Rule 38

Rule 38

Undergraduate students whose semester (excluding summer session) or cumulative grade point average drops below a 2.0 for the first time must apply for reinstatement to continue their enrollment at Washington State University. Students are placed on probation after reinstatement. Academic departments may release students from the major who are on academic probation.

Reinstatement Process for Rule 38

  1. Complete the Application for Reinstatement. Course enrollment for the subsequent semester will be cancelled if an application for reinstatement has not been received and approved.
  2. If you’ve been away from WSU for one academic semester or more, document attendance in any other institution. All academic coursework taken at another institution during the time away from WSU must be documented and transcripts submitted.
  3. After your application and fee has been processed, you will work with your academic advisor regarding your reinstatement. If you are offered reinstatement, you’ll be sent reinstatement conditions via your provided email address, which you’ll be required to sign and return before your deficiency hold will be lifted.

Current student after third semester in which cumulative GPA is below 2.0: Rule 39

Rule 39

Undergraduate students are dismissed from the University after the third semester (excluding summer session) in which the cumulative grade point average is below 2.0. Individuals who are dismissed from the University may not enroll in courses at WSU, including online and other WSU campus courses, for two full academic semesters. Dismissed individuals will also not be able to seek status as a non-degree seeking student.

One semester away from WSU (Fall or Spring)

If you were deficient due to documented extenuating circumstances, consider applying for a retroactive cancellation of enrollment through the Registrar’s Office. We will not accept reinstatement applications from students who were only out for one semester.

Two or more semesters away from WSU (Fall or Spring)

Complete the Application for Reinstatement.

Former student with second (or more) times deficient: Rule 39 and 40

Rule 40

Former students may seek reinstatement after two semesters by completing the academic reinstatement process. Former students petitioning for academic reinstatement must, as part of the reinstatement petition process, provide documentation that demonstrates potential for academic success at WSU. If seeking reinstatement after more than two semesters, former students must also apply for readmission to the University through the Office of Admissions. All academic coursework from other institutions completed during dismissed status must be documented and official transcripts submitted to the Office of Admissions.
